The Election Commission has ordered repolling in six booths, where polling was already conducted during the first phase of the Gujarat assembly elections on December 9. The repoll in these six booths will take place along with the final and second stage of polling on Thursday, December 14.

The EC took the action as the presiding office incharge forgot to wipe out the already existing mock drill data stored in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). As per the directives and training of the officers, the data has to be wiped out before using EVM for the actual polling.

BB Swain, the Chief Electoral Officer of Gujarat, informed that the poll panel has cancelled the votes registered in the EVM used in six booths spread over four constituencies that had gone to polls on December 9.

The six booths have been identified as Chorwad in Nizar (ST) constituency, Chanod Colony in Umargaon (ST) constituency, Bandharda and Gangda in Una constituency and Dhunda and Manpar both in Jam Jodhpur constituency.

“The reasons for cancelling these booth results are that the Presiding Officers (PO) had forgotten to wipe and delete the existing mock poll drill in their EVMs. We have initiated necessary actions against these lax officials,” Swain said in a statement.

The EC also said that all those involved in the repolling have been duly informed of these changes, including the voters, election officials and the representatives of the political parties.

The result of the Gujarat Assembly Elections will be declared on December 18 along with the results of Himachal Pradesh.
