A 22-year-old youth was burnt alive in broad daylight near his house allegedly by a contractor as the victim failed to return Rs. 5000 which he had borrowed from the accused.

The incident occurred in the municipal area of Panskura in East Midnapore this afternoon. The victim was rescued from the road at Suranpoll near a canal by police and locals, but succumbed to his injuries in the Panskura block primary health centre within minutes of being admitted. Police officials said the victim&’s wife has lodged a complaint naming one Sheikh Ashraf of Ranihati. According to locals, Sheikh Sarafat, the victim had borrowed Rs 5,000 from the accused a few days ago.

On Friday,  when the victim went to Panskura market, some men, reportedly associates of the accused kidnapped him. Later, the accused called up Sarafat&’s wife, demanding the immediate return of the money. The wife told him that the money would be paid back but that before this she wanted a discussion with people of her area regarding this matter. After a few minutes, she received information that her spouse has been killed and dumped on the road at Suranpoll.
