KOLKATA, 21 JUNE: Police arrested six youths, including a Trinamul Congress youth leader, on charges of ransacking Kalighat police station last night following a clash between Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) staff and local youths in which three policemen were injured.
Police said that last night a clash broke out between local youths and some KMC staff who were repairing a pipeline and had to dig the Kalighat Road. When a vehicle carrying the youths tried to enter the road the KMC staff asked them not to cross the road as it may cause damage to the repair work. Instead of co-oporating with them the youths got involved in an argument which turned into a scuffle.
Local people informed the matter to police who reached the spot and detained all the youths. But the youths, allegedly owing allegiance to the Trinamul Congress, manhandled the police officers and ransacked a portion of the Kalighat police station damaging furniture. During the attack three policemen were injured with one of them receiving serious injuries. Deepak Bera, a homeguard with the city police, received serious injury and was admitted to Kolkata Police hospital in Bhawanipore.
Police arrested Kaushik Saha, Kisan Das, Avishek Saha, Somnath Das, Prasenjit Das and Dipkumar Ghosh. According to police, Kaushik is a youth leader of TMC. They have been booked for rioting, damaging public property and theft. They were produced before the city court and remanded in judicial custody. A section of police officers alleged their counterparts did not pray for their police custody allegedly because of their association with the Trinamul Congress.
