inmates participate in drawing competition
Barrackpore, 5 January
A drawing competition was today organised at Kalyan Mancha, Khardah. Was there anything unusual about this particular competition? Yes there was. The event had been organised by the Rahra Friends’ club association and the participants were none other than 20 inmates from the Alipore Jail.
The drawing competition was arranged only for these inmates who have been serving their term for quite some time. They were perhaps arrested for crimes such as murder, robbery but today was a special occasion for all of them. The participants were Dilip Late, Debdas Ghosh, Rajjak Munsuri, Srikanta Haldar, Mantu Das and others.
Women inmates Namita Maji, Bulu Rani Grahachariya, Nandita Saha, Rimpa Chakrabarty and others participated as well.
They immediately set out to showcase this other side, this competitive side almost as soon as they reached the venue. All their drawings were apparently very creative and colourful. To inspire them, renowned international painters like Partha Pratim Deb, Biman Bihari Das, Tarun Dey and others also graced the occasion and helped them to draw and paint.
Post the competition, many of the inmates were seen voicing their desire to choose painting as their profession after their release from jail. Others said they would take up painting as a hobby.
The Rahra Friends’ club members said that they organised the event as they thought it an innovative way to try and again bring these people close to the mainstream.
