KOLKATA, 27 JUNE : A petition to relax a condition of the bail of former CPI-M MP Lakshman Seth was rejected by the Division Bench of Mr Justice Jayanta Biswas and Mr Justice Subal Baidya of Calcutta High Court today.
The former MP of Haldia had sought to go to Midnapur (east) but it was rejected on the ground that the challenge to the decision of granting him bail is pending at Supreme Court.
Earlier, 22 persons were named in the charge sheet in connection with the Nandigram carnage. Later, 66 more persons including Seth were named in a subsequent charge sheet.
Seth was arrested and spent four months in judicial custody. He was released on bail and one of the conditions specified that Seth was not to enter Midnapur (east) and his entry in the district before the panchayat elections was also strongly opposed by the government counsel.
The petitioner’s counsel had submitted that he needs to visit the district to met his ailing wife. Moreover, his family is in Midnapur and he has been adhering to the conditions of bail submitted.
