The Asansol Municipal Corporation on Tuesday distributed 12,000 jute bags and 12,000 paper bags among the school children as part of its yearlong programme titled Clean Asansol, Green Asansol. The programme was flagged off on Tuesday.

The Asansol Municipal Corporation (AMC) already has banned use of plastic bag as part of its mission to check environment pollution. “The year-long programme to prevent use of plastic bag has already been given a priority. Now we have included the school and college students to help mount pressure on the domestic quarters as they would ask their parents to avoid plastic and go green,” said Jitendra Tiwari, mayor, AMC.

A giant gate at the entrance of the city was also opened on the old GT Road stretch to mark the beginning of the year-long programme. Fifty elected councillors with the AMC donated blood during the programme today. The lamp-posts in the city were decorated with banners and festoons to make the citizen aware about the emergency of quitting polythene bags.

The AMC distributed 12,000 jute bags and 12,000 paper bags among the school children.
