Kolkata, 5 Oct: This Durga Puja, 18 carat gold gold jewellery will be used to adorn the idol of Durga at Sreebhumi pandal.
For the first time in the city, gold jewellery will be on display on the Durga idol during all five days of the festival.
The larger than life pieces of jewellery attempt to match the Goddess’s grandeur. The main necklace piece is expected to be three feet long. Eighteen craftsmen have crafted the entire collection in a week. Around 12 kg of gold has been used to create at least 18.
The general manager of the private jewellery company which has made the jewellery said: “We will make sure that the gold jewellery put on display is melted after Durga Puja, so that there is no loss. We have even stopped selling gold coins after the government announced the fiscal deficit problem.”
Speaking on the inauguration of the jewellery piece,  V Ganesha, business head of the company, said: “Kolkata was chosen because Durga Puja is best celebrated here and this is the only festival which celebrates and values gold jewellery in the best manner.” sns
