With a demand for the development of service and upgrade of the primary health centre at Goagaon in Goalpokhar-I of North Dinajpur district, the residents of Goalpokhar-I block under the banner of Haspatal O Janasatha Rakkha Sangathan staged an agitation near Raiganj Rail station today.
They demanded immediate upgrade of the Goagaon PHC otherwise they threatened to start a greater movement against the district health officials.
The Secretary of Goalpokhar-I block Hospital O Janaswastha Rakkha Sangathan, Mr Nurul Islam, said: "There is only one primary health centre at Goagaon in Goalpokhar-I block.
According to government guidelines, being the only PHC in the block, 24-hour service to patients should be provided. There should be 10-bedded indoor facilities too. In addition, the patients should have X-Ray and blood testing facilities. But the patients do not get such facilities here."
"The locals here donated 18 bigha of land to this PHC. There was a big construction and housings of the doctors but the doctors and nurses do not stay here. After evening there is no service in this PHC. No bed have been installed yet. Three months ago, we gheraoed the Block Medical Officer of Health with a demand for the development of this PHC but to no avail. As a result, we staged an agitation today in Raiganj to make the officials of the district health and administration aware of the crisis. If they fail to develop the service of the PHC shortly, then we will start a greater movement against the district health officials."
The Chief Medical Officer of Health of North Dinajpur, Dr Rasbihari Dutta, said: "We proposed the state health officials to appoint some doctors and nursing staff in this PHC. In addition, we sought the assistance of the district administration. The officials of the district administration are trying to develop it with the minority development fund.”
