BEHRAMPORE, 15 JUNE: A 16 year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered near her residence at Sonadanga village under Ranitala police station in Murshidabad.
The district Congress today called a 12 hour-bandh on 19 June in Murshidabad to protest the incident. Police, however, claimed the allegation of rape was a rumour. It was a case of murder, police said.
Murshidabad district Congress secretary, Mr Ashoke Das, alleged the local police, especially the OC, Mr Biplab Karmakar, made all possible attempts to hush up the incident. After Kamduni in Barasat, Sonadanga in Murshidabad added another face to the series of rape-and-murder incidents that have come to light recently in the state, Mr Das said.
The girl was reportedly missing since 11 June. Her mutilated body was found in a jute-field, said local people.
The Congress leaders here alleged the girl could have been saved had police done their duty. The local police prevented the victim&’s family from lodging a missing diary, they alleged. Murshidabad SP Humayun Kabir said: “The girl was not raped. Raising false allegation of rape is derogatory to the girl and her family. The girl&’s murder is being probed. Her relationship with a neighbour may have led to her death."
A Congress delegation, including some party MLAs, visited the victim&’s family. The delegation alleged the rapists were close to the Trinamul Congress.
The Trinamul Congress, meanwhile, has denied the allegation.
