Food subsidy for Gangasagar pilgrims

The state government has set up several counters for distributing foodgrains among the pilgrims at Gangasagar Mela at concessional rates, Jyotipriya Mallick, state food and supplies department minister, said on Monday at Khadya Bhawan.

He said the government would spend Rs.40 lakhs for this purpose. Rice, flour, biscuit, mustard oil, detergent powers and spices, including turmeric, will be given to the pilgrims.“These counters will be set up at Sagar, Kakdwip and Namkhana. The counter will be open for as long as the Gangasagar fair continues,” he said. Mallick said that A grade rice will be available at Rs.9 per kg and 40 metric tons of rice have been sent to Sagar. Flour at Rs 13 per kg will be available at counters of Namkhana and Kakdwip and at Rs.13.50 per kg at Sagar.

"The food and supplies department has sent 40 metric tons of flour, 300 kg detergent powder and other items,” he said.

Mallick said that the state government would procure rice from 302 central purchasing counters (CPC-Kishan Mundi), of which 189 are operational. “Over 75 central purchasing counters will be handed to the state food and supplies department,” he said.

Mallick also said that the Centre should help the state financially so that rate of distress sale by farmers can be reduced.

The minister said, food and supplies department has sent 40 metric tons of flour.
