Errors detected in digital ration cards will be rectified soon, Jyotipriya Mullick, state food and supplies minister said on Thursday.

He admitted that several complaints had been lodged regarding errors in digital ration cards. Forward Bloc supporters have launched agitation in several places against the issuance of digital ration cards with errors in beneficiaries’ names, addresses and even photographs.

Mullick, however, said that Forward Bloc supporters were politicising the issue. "Some ministers were involved in several scams of the food and supplies department during Left Front’s tenure. Left Front accomplices have no moral right to launch such movements," he said.

Mullick said all MLAs, MPs and panchayats would be urged to participate in a meeting soon to discuss the issuing process of the digital ration cards, implementation of the Food Security Act and other matters related to the food and supplies department. He said that the public distribution system has been thoroughly overhauled through massive e-governance measures. He also said that bar-coded or quick response digital ration cards are being issued to all eligible beneficiaries.

"More than 7.8 crore ration cards have been digitised. The West Bengal government has started distribution of such digital ration cards in Dakshin Dinajpur and Cooch Behar and distribution will be started in other districts too," said an official of food and supplies department. However, Forward Bloc supporters alleged that several persons, who were enlisted as below poverty line (BPL) card holders are yet to get digital ration cards.

"Beneficiaries under ration system are being asked to visit several ration shops for collecting different items, which is cumbersome," the supporter said. It may be recalled that chief minister Mamata Banerjee said that to strengthen public distribution system (PDS), barcoded or quick response coded digital ration cards are being issued to all eligible beneficiaries and these cards will help them get foodgrains at subsidised rates from PDS, ensuring food security and nutrition.
