KOLKATA, 5 OCT: Eastern Railway has augmented the capacity of 96 local trains from the previous nine coaches to 12 coaches in the first half of the current fiscal year and plans to gradually augment the remaining ones. Of the 96 trains that are now running with 12 coaches, 64 are in the Howrah division and 32 in the Sealdah division.
With this move, the carrying capacity of these trains has increased by about 33 per cent, directly benefiting the commuters.
ER is trying to increase the length of remaining suburban trains to 12 coaches and for this, the corresponding upgrade of infrastructure such as extending the length of the platform, and maintenance lines have been identified along with works already been undertaken in some areas.
Eastern Railway runs 1,284 local trains  ~ 419 in Howrah division and 865 in Sealdah division, carrying nearly 30 lakh commuters daily. sns
