A constable was arrested while demanding bribe from a lorry driver in Burdwan today on a day when two cops of the district were given ‘Nishtha’ medals by the Chief Minister.
The accused constable has been produced in the court, sources said.
Khondekar Khairul Alam, a constable with the Ausgram PS in Burdwan, was seen beating the driver of a lorry on the NH-2 this morning after the lorry driver refused to pay the bribe. The driver later lodged a complaint with the Ausgram PS and the accused was taken into custody.
The SP, Burdwan, Mr S M H Meerza said: “The accused had stopped the lorry and claimed money from the driver. When the driver asked why, he dragged him out of the crew cabin and beat him up ruthlessly.”
One ASI with the District Intelligence Branch of the Burdwan Police District, Mr Dilip Kumar Banerjee, and Constable Mr Hitlar Mondal were honoured with ‘Nishtha’ medal and ‘Sewa’ medal by Miss Mamata Banerjee today.
A civilian, Mr Musharraf Chowdhury of Mathurapur village in Raina was honoured with a ‘Bravery Award.’
