BJP leader in Malda and MLA Shamik Bhattacharya on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Malda Superintendent of Police Prasun Banerjee over what he said was the top cop&’s failure in providing security “even to his policemen” during violence that rocked Kaliachak last Sunday.
“He (SP) has been working like he is the district secretary of the ruling party,” Mr Bhattacharya said, as he met the Press after being released by the police.
Police on Wednesday detained the BJP leader and stopped him from going to Kaliachak to “inspect” the post-violence scenario there.
After detaining Mr Bhattacharya for almost 90 minutes in the English Bazaar Police station, the police released him, along with 25 others, including two statelevel BJP leaders Biswapriya Roychoudhury and Uttam Dutta.
The BJP later took out a rally in the town. SP Banerjee, meanwhile, said the Kaliachak area was still under prohibitory orders under section 144 and that Mr Bhattacharya was barred from going there for this very reason.
“Some local miscreants instigated the violence and torching of the police station to decimate their criminal records under the veil of a religious procession,” Mr Bhattacharya, meanwhile, said of Sunday&’s violence.
“It was total failure on the part of the police who did not even know in advance that such a huge gathering was taking place there,” he added.
The BJP has demanded that the National investigation Agency (NIA) take up the matter. Sources have said that an NIA team is likely to visit the district very soon.
Another BJP leader of the district, Srirupa Mitra Choudhury, meanwhile, claimed that she met Home Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi on Wednesday and that he has expressed his wish to visit Malda over the Kaliachak issue on 18 January.
Meanwhile, an all-party meeting has been called at the Kaliachak Block Development Office among the local people and BDO Kuntal Bose.
The meeting will talk ways to bring back normalcy in the troubled area. It may be mentioned that a procession of the Muslim community was underway in Kaliachak on Sunday when violence erupted and an irate mob torched the police station and burnt down vehicles.
The Muslim community was protesting the ‘blasphemous’ remarks against Prophet Mohammad made by Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tripathy in Uttar Pradesh a few days ago.
