At least 20 persons were injured in different clashes between the Trinamul Congress and the Congress in some areas while at other areas between the Trinamul Congress and the CPI-M. Those injured are being treated in Malda Medical College Hospital (MMCH). Police could not arrest anyone even after receiving complaints.
A woman supporter of the Trinamul Congress, Ms Zarina Bibi (50), was shot at allegedly by the Congress last night at Purba Sultantola village of Panchanandapur area. She received a bullet injury in her leg and was rushed to MMCH. She alleged that the Congress supporters warned her to abstain from campaigning in favour of the Trinamul. As she refused to give in, she was shot in her leg. Four more Trinamul supporters were injured in the incident.
Former Congress minister and Mothabari MLA, Mrs Sabina Yeasmin, however, claimed that the incident was a consequence of factional fight of the Trinamul. Mrs Yeasmin and district Congress general secretary Narendranath Tiwary today lodged a police complaint against the Tourism Minister Mr Krishnendu Choudhury alleging that he was influencing voters at Panchanandapur. Mr Choudhury, rubbishing the allegation, said: “I went to meet the family of Zarina Bibi as she was injured by the Congress hooligans. It is my moral responsibility.”
He counter alleged that Mrs Yeasmin and other Congress leaders had been providing shelters to the extremists from Jharkhand and Bihar so that they can disrupt the elections. “The Congress leaders are in nexus with extremist groups like the Maoists. They have realised that they will face a landslide defeat in the election. They have no other way but to terrorise the voters,” Mr Choudhury said.
Meanwhile, the mysterious death of a Trinamul candidate&’s brother-in-law, Sanjay Mandal (40), last night rocked Mathurapur area in the Manikchak police station last night. The deceased&’s sister-in-law and Trinamul gram panchayat candidate Ms Minu Mandal said that Sanjay&’s vein was cut and he was killed. He was declared brought dead after bringing to MMCH last night. Though the family accused no specific person, they conclude that Sanjay was killed as a part of a political conspiracy.
In a separate incident, Trinamul and CPI-M supporters were entangled in clashes at Gokulnagar village of Amrity area and Kumarpur village of Jadupur II area in the English Bazaar police station last night. Seven CPI-M supporters and two Trinamul supporters were injured in those clashes.
Trinamul leaders said that their supporter Mr Sukumar Chowdhury (35) was attacked by the CPI-M. Another supporter, Mr Goffur Sheikh was injured too in a bid to rescue Sukumar. They were admitted to MMCH. the CPI-M leader, Mr Koushik Mishra, however, claimed that the Trinamul supporters attacked and ransacked their party office.
While the CPI-M district secretary Mr Ambar Mitra and district Congress President mr AH Khan Choudhury (Dalu) blamed the Trinamul for waging violence against the Opposition, the district Trinamul president and Minister Mrs Sabitri Mitra said that the Congress and the CPI-M had got into an unwritten pact to terrorise the Trinamul at different areas of Malda.
