The beloved title of “oldest dog ever” has been through quite the journey lately, as Guinness World Records (GWR) has made the tough decision to strip Bobi, a Portuguese pooch, of this prestigious honor. Bobi, who sadly passed away at the grand age of 31 in October 2023, had initially claimed the record back in February 2023. However, recent investigations into his age have left GWR with no choice but to revoke his title.

Mark McKinley, the director of records at GWR, expressed the organization’s commitment to maintaining the utmost accuracy and integrity in their records. Concerns raised by veterinarians and experts prompted a thorough review of Bobi’s case, including his microchip data and veterinary statements. Despite their efforts, conclusive evidence of Bobi’s actual date of birth could not be found, leading to the decision to remove him from the record books.

Bobi, born on May 11, 1992, lived out his days as a loyal guard dog on a farm in the village of Conqueiros in Portugal. His title suspension earlier in January, following an investigative report by Wired, set the stage for this latest development.

As for the future of the “oldest dog ever” title, McKinley acknowledged that it will take time for microchip databases worldwide to catch up with pet ownership, especially for older pets like Bobi. He encouraged pet owners to reach out to GWR with evidence spanning the entirety of their pet’s life, including consultation with veterinarians and verification of microchip data.

With Bobi no longer holding the title, the search for the next record-holder begins. It’s a bittersweet moment, as we remember Bobi’s remarkable life while also eagerly anticipating the next canine contender to claim this esteemed title. Until then, the legacy of Bobi, the beloved Portuguese pooch, will continue to inspire dog lovers around the globe.
