The Spanish world No.1 Carlos Alcaraz fought back from a set down to defeat Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller, claiming his maiden Wimbledon men's singles title, denying the Serbian legend a fifth consecutive crown at SW19 and prolonging his wait for a 24th major.
No.6 seed Ons Jabeur rallied for a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 win over No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka on Centre Court to book a place in her third career Grand Slam final and second straight at the Wimbledon, here on Thursday.
"I wish him all the best and I hope he recovers quickly so we see him back on the courts. He could have won the match at the end. Obviously, he was the better player, so I definitely got a bit lucky," added Federer.
On a busy first day, 10th seed Denis Shapovalov of Canada will be in action against Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber, while 22nd seed Daniel Evans of England is scheduled to take on Feliciano Lopez of Spain.
"Of course, to play the final here, with this atmosphere and these fans, it's great. I love to play on this surface, let's see and hope if I can continue this next week (at Wimbledon)."
Ticket prices will, however, remain at 2020 prices after last year's event was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Nadal defeated Federer 6–4, 6–4, 6–7 (5–7), 6–7 (8–10), 9–7 in a match that lasted four hours and 48 minutes.
