The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) has asked two premier private hospitals in the city to pay Rs 10 lakh each after the two healthcare units were found guilty in deaths of two patients.
Justice Banerjee also said for now, patients or their relatives could approach the commission if they are charged more than the rates fixed through the advisory issued in 2020.
In another case, the commission has fined Rs 10,000 to Quadra Diagnostic Centre in the Mukundapur area for showing a highly abnormal blood test report of a toddler of 22 months.
According to the legal cell, Bijaya had been admitted to Avlon Nursing Home at Matigara in Siliguri on 22 May, where she underwent treatment for 20 days. The nursing home had billed their family Rs 8,34,000.
“The advisory issued by the commission in July won’t be cost-effective for big hospitals accommodating more than 150 beds each. We will incur huge loss following the advisory capping the rates of pathological and radiological tests,” they said during the meeting.
The neurosurgeon referred the patient to a radiation oncologist of the hospital after his condition deteriorated, suffering fatigue, sweating, and breathlessness after undergoing chemo with steroid medication.
