A 26-year-old woman, an inmate of a privately run home, Satyabharati, at Nabagram, Uttarpara, lodged a complaint with Serampore women police station on Thursday, alleging physical abuse by the home’s owner, Ajay Chatterjee.
The alarming rise in drowning deaths along the Hooghly river, from Uttarpara to Bansberia, has become a major concern, not only for parents but also for those performing religious rituals at various ghats across the district.
Serampore MP Kalyan Banerjee on the occasion said, “Efforts were made to dampen the spirit of Durga Puja and carnival under the garb of protests and agitations but nothing worked. Even predictions of a heavy downpour proved wrong. There is no stopping the spontaneous flow of emotions and sentiments.”
