Trapped in the Darien Gap

The Darien Gap is a stretch of densely forested jungle across northern Colombia and southern Panama. Roughly 60 miles (97 kilometres) across, the terrain is muddy, wet and unstable. No paved roads exist in the Darien Gap. Yet despite this, it has become a major route for global human migration.

Egregious violators

In a statement issued this week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo designated Pakistan, Iran, China, Nigeria, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Myanmar and Eritrea as countries that engage in or tolerate “systematic, ongoing, egregious violations of religious freedom” under the country’s International Religious Freedom Act.

Year of the Dragon
