The Union Minister for Textiles, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Commerce & Industry informed about an exhibition of 75 types of handwoven sarees of India to be organised in New Delhi.
According to the Tamil Nadu Spinning Association and reports from other places, the average price of cotton was Rs35,000 a candy (345 kg) in October 2020 and it rose to Rs 55,000 in October 2021, when the new cotton season started.
About a hundred out of the 450 power looms across the state have already started manufacturing textiles for school uniforms and 25,000 metres of textile have already been manufactured by them. The target is to produce 40 lakh metres of fabric by April- May this year.
The textile sector has continuously maintained a trade surplus with exports manifold higher than imports. In FY 2020-21 there was a deceleration in textile exports due to pandemic disrupting the supply chain and demand.
The Minister said Indian industrialists should align with best standards in Textile manufacturing for their domestic and international consumers.
