Terrorism is back

The March 22 attacks in Moscow have raised the spectre of international terrorism. While these terror strikes were claimed by the Islamic State, Russia suspects a Ukrainian hand in the attacks.

The recent impressive victory of Vladimir Putin for the presidency of the Russian Federation was expected and it is generally believed that even in a Western type of competitive democratic politics he would have won by a comfortable majority.

Despite the Russia-Ukraine War that has been raging for 16 months now, one can say that compared to the previous centuries, the present century has so far been relatively peaceful, though fundamentalist forces threaten to tear this peace asunder. One reason for this is the advent of democracy in different parts of the world, and as Amartya Sen had said, democracies rarely, if at all, fight each other.
