The Special Court for Economic Offences in Bengaluru on Friday rejected the bail petition of jailed actress Ranya Rao in connection with the gold smuggling case. Ranya Rao is the stepdaughter of senior IPS officer DGP K. Ramachandra Rao and the case has made national headlines.
The CBI, which has begun the investigations, has filed a case based on which the ED searches began, to find further evidence in the case and also to detect and identify any more people involved in the smuggling racket.
The case involving the step-daughter of a senior IPS officer has already ruffled many political feathers in the southern state.
The Kannada actress Ranya Rao gold smuggling case is slowly but surely assuming the proportions of a full-blown political war between the opposition BJP and the ruling Congress regime in the state, with accusations and counter-accusations heating up the political temperature.
He added, "This has come as a complete shock and a huge disappointment and letdown. If any violation is there, the law will take its course."
DRI officials had stationed a team at the airport to intercept her upon arrival, and she was taken into custody immediately after landing.
Sources revealed that she had made four trips to Dubai in just 15 days, raising suspicions. Investigators suspect she may have been smuggling gold on multiple occasions.
The DRI team had been tipped off about her involvement in gold smuggling, and they had stationed themselves at the airport two hours prior to her arrival.
