The Oxford English dictionary defines ‘Guru’ as a “Hindu spiritual teacher. Also, each of the ten first leaders of the Sikh religion. The word comes from Sanskrit meaning ‘weighty’, ‘grave', hence 'elder, teacher’’. It must be the third sentence of this definition that must have irked Rabindranath Tagore.

Today, it has become necessary for us to rediscover Rabindranath Tagore's idea of innerstrength and hope. The Covid-19 pandemic is transforming countless lives throughout the world. Because of the pandemic and the resultant lockdown we have become lonelier and susceptible to an uncanny sense of uncertainty. In these bleak times Tagore's writings remind us that no one is alone and that we are a collectivity. His writings can inspire us to believe that through hope and through faith in ourselves we can face and overcome this global calamity.

Five busts in Siliguri send harmony message

Manik Dey, the councillor of Ward-13, has taken initiatives to install busts of five poets of different communities in his ward, and he has named the same 'Kabi Tirtha'. State tourism minister Gautam Deb unveiled the busts of Rabindranath Tagore, Bhanu Bhakta Acharya, Tulsidas, Kazi Nazrul Islam and Vir Singh.
