The Trinamul Congress (TMC) is facing unrest in South 24-Parganas after a section of party workers launched protests in Canning East, demanding that sitting MLA Saokat Molla be retained as the candidate from the constituency instead of being shifted to Bhangar.
Congress workers, led by state party leaders, tried to march towards the Assembly building but were stopped midway leading to bedlam and blockade of the road between Karnprayag and Gairsain.
The protest, led by the Rajasthan Sonam Wangchuk Release Forum, was held near the main gate of the jail, where demonstrators staged a dharna in support of their demand.
From Indore to Puducherry and Varanasi to Delhi, BJP workers staged demonstrations condemning the disruption, with several protests turning violent.
The group, however, made it clear that it will continue democratic forms of protest until Singh is released unconditionally.
