Hunger is an enemy we must tackle

Hunger is a common physiological phenomenon. It is measured by the prevalence of undernourishment i.e. an individual’s habitual consumption of inadequate food.

Aspects of Poverty~II

The Expert Group (Tendulkar) computed PL for 2004-05 at a level that was equivalent, in Purchasing Power Parity terms to Rs 27 for rural India and Rs 33 for urban India. Percentage of population below PL calculated by the Lakdawala Committee and the Tendulkar Committee for the year 2004-2005 appears. (see table above).

Banking the unbanked

Credit is a powerful tool if it is used effectively and is made available to the creditworthy among the economically active poor ~ people with the ability to use loans and the willingness to repay them. But it has to be bundled with services such as training to maximise impact on livelihoods.

Eye on microfinance~II

There has been a growing awareness among microfinance institutions that credit is certainly not transformative. Although certain people will be able to use microfinance to alter their future and build their businesses, that is not the case with the majority who receive a loan. Most are going to use it to smooth out their consumption.
