Claiming that Mulayam deserved such big award, Shivpal , younger brother of Mulayam, said, "Netaji had always raised the voice of the farmers, poor and youth of the country as well as the state.
The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. The awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March and April every year.
In 2011, when the Anna Andolan was at its peak, she walked all the way from Bandra to Juhu in Mumbai to support the then Mumbai's Team Anna March in August that year.
'Padma Vibhushan' is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service.
The Padma Awards are given in three categories: Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of higher-order) and Padma Shri (distinguished service).
The nominations can be from among women, SC/STs, “divyang” persons and those who are doing selfless service to society.
The nominations/recommendations for Padma Awards will be received online only on the Padma Award portal https://padmaawards.gov.in.
Babasaheb Purandare was conferred the 'Maharashtra Bhushan' (2015) and the country's second-highest civilian honour 'Padma Vibhushan' in 2019.
