The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Eastern Zone Bench in Kolkata, has ordered an immediate suspension of the ongoing road construction in Manipur's hilly and forested areas, pending comprehensive environmental and geological safety assessments.
The authorities of Visva-Bharati University (VBU) have decided that this year’s Poush Mela will be held after securing all necessary clearances from the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
The direction came from a bench comprising Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Chairperson, and Dr. A. Senthil Vel, expert member, while hearing an application filed by Rita Sharma and others against the State of Himachal Pradesh and others.
The matter originated from a letter petition by Shailendra Kumar Yadav, highlighting ecological damage caused by the uncontrolled movement of horses in the reserved forest area of Kufri and its impact on natural vegetation and local ecology.
The case pertains to the discharge of untreated leachate into river Beas at village Rangadi, gram panchayat Shallen, Manali .
SC said there are sufficient safeguards in the plan to balance the need for development while taking care of and addressing the environmental and ecological concerns.
The Committee shall examine the matter, if necessary, visit the site concerned, collect relevant information, study the matter, and submit a detailed factual report with all relevant materials within three months, said the NGT.
It has been unanimously decided in the meeting that this year Visva-Bharati University (VBU) will organise the Poush Mela after a hiatus of three years.
In case violations are found, the Committee shall recommend penalty as well as environmental compensation and also suggest remedial measures, if any, the NGT concluded while posting the matter for further hearing on 10 January.
