The Centre has not given a single paisa to hold Gangasagar mela scheduled to be held from 8-17 January, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said today.

Additionally, he highlighted that to decongest the port, a project has been taken up at Balagarh at a cost of Rs 400 crore and for which a DPR (detailed project report) has been made. He said the project will be implemented over 300 acres of land, where two jetties will be built for handling containers and bulk cargo. This will take goods traffic off the road and instead barges can take goods via waterways directly to Balagarh for further dispatch.
The port also plans to develop an integrated and seamless end to end delivery infrastructure and organizational system, connecting not only Pandu, Silchar and Karimganj in Assam, but also Tripura and Mizoram via Chattogram, in addition to development of cargo connectivity to Barak valley all the way to Sittwe in Myanmar.
