A Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi made it clear that the proposed expert committee would function under the direct control and supervision of the Supreme Court.
The joint operation will be carried out by the Mines, Revenue, Police, Transport and Forest departments in coordinated action under the supervision of district collectors.
Replying to a query by BJD member Sambit Patra, the minister told the Upper House that the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), periodically reviews the environmental compliance status of operating coal mines, including the mines in Sundargarh district of Odisha.
The new rule will pave the way for a hassle-free ambience for the mining lessees to further facilitate the ease of doing business in the state.
Himachal Pradesh Industries Director Dr Yunus said that the crackdown, backed by more than 900 inspections across the state, aims to protect environmental balance, safeguard water sources, and prevent revenue loss to the state.
Between 2022-23 and 2024-25, a total of 29,276 cases were detected, and a fine of Rs 18.33 crore was imposed on the offenders, according to the Ministry of Mines.
