Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday strongly condemned the alleged gangrape of a medical student in Durgapur and directed the police to take strict action against the culprits.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken a suo motu cognisance of the gangrape of a second-year medical student from Odisha.
Meanwhile, Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, expressing deep anguish over the incident, reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards crime against women.
Three men, including an auto driver, were arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape of a woman from Odisha in South East Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan area. They have been identified as Prabhu Mahto, Parmod Babu, and Mohammad Shamsul.
She was talking to the accused who gave her chocolate and by the time she put that in her bag, she fell unconscious and when she woke up, found herself in a bed and the accused took turns to rape her.
The Mysuru police investigating team which faced steep obstacles during their probe, is now confident of getting the culprits maximum punishment. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has stated in the state legislative assembly that the prosecution will seek the death penalty for the accused
The sources said that the officers will also convince her to conduct an in-person identification of the accused soon. She has already identified the perpetrators in photographs.
Araga Jnanendra has stated that, the police department cannot force the victim of gang rape to record her statement. "We will not insist on the victim," he reiterated.
Additional DGP Pratap Reddy who is in-charge of the special team said, the gang rape incident is a challenging case for the police. The officers are conducting investigations without the statement of the girl.
