Lashed by heavy downpour during the afternoon, the city plunged into darkness around 3pm. The heavy showers were triggered by deep depression over Northeast Bay of Bengal, off the Bangladesh coast, bringing ‘orange warning’ of heavy to very heavy rainfall between 7-20cm by the weather office for Kolkata and seven other districts of south Bengal, today.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange warning for Gangetic West Bengal for the period 9-11 May.
Meanwhile, the low-pressure area over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of the south Andaman Sea and Southeast Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestward and concentrated into a depression in the morning at 08:30 am on Saturday.
Due to the impact of low pressure areas, heavy rain will lash in eight districts while Balasore and Mayurbhanj district will bear the brunt of heavy to very heavy rainfall, the weather bulletin said.
Additionally, parts of Kidderpore, Mominpore Jinjira Bazar and Behala were also affected due to water logging.
The rainfall which started from Saturday in the city and its surrounding districts will continue to bring much needed respite from the extremely hot and humid conditions of the past few weeks.
