Shah further noted that the fishing community has suffered the most since their villages were washed away by the sea, due to which thousands of families had to migrate in search of employment.
"The Government of India attaches high priority to the issue of Indian fishermen and civilian prisoners in Pakistan’s custody and has urged the Government of Pakistan to expedite the release and repatriation of all Indian prisoners, including fishermen who remain in Pakistan’s custody," the MEA said in a statement.
Thirty-four Indian fishermen were detained by the Bangladesh Navy in the Bay of Bengal near the Sundarbans for allegedly crossing into Bangladesh's territorial waters, Indian officials said on Monday.
India on Tuesday asked Pakistan to expedite the release and repatriation of 159 Indian fishermen and civilian prisoners who have completed their sentences.
The state fisheries department organised an awareness camp for fishermen to promote the conservation of juvenile Hilsa fish.
"Sri Lanka has two laws -- the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act of 1996 and the Fisheries Regulation of Foreign Fishing Boats of 1979. Both these acts were amended in 2018 and 2023, providing for much stiffer sentences, bigger fines, and greater detention," he told the House.
