Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday remembered the Emergency imposed in 1975 as a grave attack on India's democratic framework, paying tribute to those who opposed the period and reiterating the government's resolve to uphold constitutional principles, democratic institutions and citizens' freedoms.
The new National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) Class 9 social sciences textbook includes a topic on the "Emergency," describing it as "one of the major challenges" faced by Indian democracy, an official from the institution confirmed on Thursday.
For the first time, NCERT has included a chapter on the 1975-77 Emergency in a Class 9 Social Science textbook. The lesson describes the period as a major challenge to Indian democracy and discusses the suspension of Fundamental Rights, censorship, political arrests and the restoration of democracy through the 1977 general election.

The Vice president said, “50 years ago, this day, the oldest, the largest and now the most vibrant democracy went through difficult air pocket, unexpected hazard in the shape of headwinds, nothing short of earthquake to destroy democracy. It was an imposition of emergency. The night was dark, the cabinet was sidelined."
