The Election Commission of India’s recent announcement of by-elections to three Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal, which fell vacant following the resignations of Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik — the three Trinamool Congress MPs who stepped down after the party’s debacle in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections — has brought the focus back on the former MPs and the BJP’s plans for them.
"The Election Commission has heard our case today, and now we are waiting. We are in our fight," Natarajan told reporters in Delhi.
The 1998-batch IAS officer of the West Bengal cadre is replacing Manoj Kumar Agarwal, who was earlier appointed as the state's new Chief Secretary.
According to officials, Punjab currently has around 2.14 crore registered voters, and the revision exercise aims to update the electoral database ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections in the state.
The development comes after the Election Commission of India announced elections for 37 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in 10 states.
The fresh directions were issued after the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court informed the apex court that around 250 District and Additional District Judges had been assigned the task of examining nearly 50 lakh claims and objections
The ECI has already decided to deploy CAPF personnel in the state even before the announcement of polling dates and the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
Talking to the media at the airport here Friday Gehlot said "In the observation yesterday the apex court's intent was to flag such distribution of money amidst poll process and not for welfare centric initiatives for the poor and weaker sections".
A minimum gap of 25 days will be maintained between the announcement of the election dates and the polling day, with voting expected to be held in the first week of April, most likely between April 3 and April 7.
