District and Sessions Judge N Harikumar, while granting the bail, allowed Mamkootathil’s appeal against the dismissal of his bail application by a judicial magistrate's court that had denied him bail, stating that the allegations against him were serious and that he had similar antecedents.
The sessions court Judge, Nazeera S, had, on Wednesday, granted anticipatory bail to Rahul Makootathil, holding that there was no prima facie material to support the survivor’s allegation that the MLA had raped her.
The court heard arguments on the anticipatory bail plea in a closed-door session at the request of both sides. The hearing lasted for more than an hour.
"I wanted that kind of conduct you had, you did not deserve to be a member of the house for four years. I took the decision after the request and apology of the members of your party (Congress)," Devnani strictly said.
Earlier, he approached the vigilance court, Thiruvananthapuram seeking a probe under the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau.
