Manchester United lost to rivals Manchester City 1-2 in the English Premier League (EPL) fixture at the Old Trafford on Sunday.

Nicolas Otamendi scored the winner for City in the 54th minute after Marcus Rashford helped the Reds level the score nearing the end of first half (45+2’ min). David Silva had provided the visitors lead in the 43rd minute.

Reacting to the loss, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho felt that the referee made ‘a crucial mistake’ which proved decisive in United’s derby defeat. In his post match press conference, Mourinho said, “Clear penalty. I’m sorry for us, I’m sorry for Michael [Oliver, the referee]; I think he had a good performance but it’s a clear penalty. The referee made a mistake, which can happen.”

“Last season we had a similar situation here against Man City – City were winning 2-1 and [the referee] Mr [Mark] Clattenburg didn’t see the penalty, [Claudio] Bravo on [Wayne] Rooney, and this one also. It’s a clear penalty and I feel sorry for Mr Oliver because he had a good performance. He’s a human being and tried his best; he was very committed to having a good match, which I think he had. He made one mistake, which was a crucial mistake for the result of the match,” Mourinho was quoted by ManUtd.com.

Meanwhile, ManU defender Victor Lindelof told ManUtd.com that the players were disappointed with the result. “We are disappointed of course; we always want to win the games, especially this one so we are disappointed with the result. The atmosphere was amazing [in my first derby]; the fans were amazing as always and especially today. We wanted to win for them today but unfortunately we didn’t do that. On to the next one – we have a new game coming up that we need to focus on and get the three points from.”
