Indian skipper Virat Kohli added another feather to his illustrious cap on Tuesday during the third One Day International (ODI) match between India and England.

On Thursday during his 71-run knock against the English team, Virat Kohli became the fastest captain to score 3,000 runs in ODIs. The 29-year-old captain reached this milestone in the 10th over of the series decider match against England in Headingley.

Virat Kohli took only 49 innings to score 3,000 runs in the limited overs format as a skipper — 11 fewer innings taken by the previous record holder AB de Villiers to achieve the same feat. Former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers had taken 60 innings to score 3,000 ODI runs as a captain, followed by India’s MS Dhoni (70 innings) and Sourav Ganguly (74 innings). Veteran South African cricketer Greame Smith and Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq had taken 83 innings to reach the landmark of 3,000 runs. Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya and Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting had taken 84 innings.

Earlier this month, Virat Kohli also became the fastest player (56 innings) to reach the 2,000-run mark in the shortest format of the game. Virat Kohli had achieved this feat during the opening T20 match against England at Manchester. Other than Virat, only two men cricketers have scored 2,000 runs in the T20I cricket New Zealand’s Martin Guptill (2,271 runs) and his teammate Brendon McCullum, who has 2,140 runs.
