Dehradun SSP Ajay Singh stated that the couple was arrested after an extensive probe under the ongoing campaign Operation Kalnemi, launched to identify antisocial elements living in disguise.

Singh said the police acted on a tip-off received by the intelligence wing regarding Mamun and a woman named Reena, who were reportedly living in the city illegally and frequently changing their names and addresses.
Mamun allegedly prepared fake documents with Reena’s help using the identity of her estranged husband, Sachin Chauhan. Police revealed that Mamun had obtained an Aadhaar card in the name of Sachin Chauhan and had been living in Dehradun under that identity.
Singh added that police are probing the matter to determine whether the couple was engaged in any anti-national activities. Investigators are also working to identify officials who may have helped the Bangladeshi national obtain fake documents.
Police said Mamun became acquainted with Reena Chauhan, a woman from Tyuni in the Dehradun district, through Facebook. Following this, Hasan first came to Dehradun on a tourist visa in 2019 and stayed with Reena for two months. He made repeated visits to Dehradun on tourist visas in 2020 and 2021, staying with her for extended periods.
Officials further stated that during his 2021 visit, Hasan overstayed illegally even after his visa expired and subsequently took Reena to Bangladesh. Hasan married Reena in Bangladesh before returning to Dehradun.
The couple frequently crossed the border and travelled between Bangladesh and Dehradun. During this time, Reena used her local network to help Hasan procure a fake Aadhaar card in the name of her estranged husband, Sachin Chauhan. Hasan also began working as a bouncer at a gymnasium in Dehradun.
They lived as husband and wife and kept shifting houses, making it difficult for the police and administration to detect their activities.
Police stated that during interrogation, Hasan confessed to being a Bangladeshi national from Mujibnagar Police Station in Meherpur district. The arrested couple had been living on rent at Alaknanda Enclave in Dehradun.
Authorities are now searching for those who assisted Hasan in obtaining forged documents. Central agencies monitoring cross-border infiltration have also been alerted about the arrest of Reena and Hasan.
SSP Ajay Singh said that under Operation Kalnemi, 16 Bangladeshi nationals hiding in Dehradun have been arrested so far. Nine of them have been deported, while seven were imprisoned for their involvement in various crimes.
