According to the investigation, Khan was appointed as an assistant teacher at the Alia Madrasa, Darul Uloom Ahle Sunnat Madrasa Ashrafia, Mubarakpur, Azamgarh on 12 July 1984. From 2007-2008 onwards, he reportedly took up residence in the United Kingdom; on 19 December 2013 he voluntarily acquired British citizenship.
From 2007 to 2017 annual salary increments were granted to him without verification of his service book; his pension was approved beginning 1 August 2017, which authorities say is entirely irregular.
Further, the ATS investigation indicates that during his tenure, he made multiple foreign trips, collected funds abroad under the guise of “Islamic religious propagation,” channelled those funds via various means to madrasas, and allegedly received commission or brokerage on those transactions. The madarsa has been sealed by the district administration.
Prior to this case, two other FIRs had been registered against Shamshul Huda Khan in Sant Kabir Nagar and Azamgarh districts; chargesheets have already been forwarded in those matters.
Commenting on the development, Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order) Amitabh Yash said, “We have acted on credible intelligence indicating misuse of citizenship status, travel abroad and fund-flows under the pretext of religious activity. No individual is above the law. We will ensure that irregularities in the appointment, service increments and pension approvals are probed thoroughly and if the allegations of channelising foreign funds to madrasa institutions are substantiated, strict legal action will follow.”
He added that the Uttar Pradesh Police remain vigilant against organisations and individuals who exploit religious institutions or foreign travel privileges to engage in activities detrimental to national security and social peace. The matter is under further investigation by the ATS and the district police.
