Unnao rape case: Two arrested for bid to extract Rs 1 crore from accused BJP MLA’s wife

Two men indentified as Alok and Vijay have been arrested for trying to extract money from the wife of Unnao rape accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar on the pretext of getting the case against him dropped.

The police arrested both the accused on Thursday. One of them was posing as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and the other as a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer. According to a report in the Hindustan Times, the conmen demanded Rs 1 crore from Sangeeta Singh, wife of the BJP MLA and when she told them that she wouldn’t be able to arrange Rs. 1 crore, they asked her to get 50 lakh.

“Two people have been arrested for demanding Rs 1 crore from Sangeeta Singh, wife of Kuldeep Singh Sengar. They were offering to secure release of the MLA from custody,” HT quoted Deepak Kumar, SSP, Lucknow as saying.

On May 5, Sangeeta had received a phone call from a person who claimed to be a BJP leader. He demanded Rs 1 crore to secure Sengar’s release by bribing CBI officials. He asked her to arrange Rs 50 lakh when she said it would not be possible to get Rs 1 crore.

On May 6, she received another call. This time the person introduced himself as CBI officer Rajeev Mishra, who also offered the same thing.

Meanwhile, the CBI on Friday confirmed the rape charge against Kuldeep Singh Sengar. The probe agency found that Sengar raped the minor girl at his home in Makhi village on 4 June in 2017, as has been alleged by the victim.

The CBI probe revealed that the rape happened while Shashi Singh, Sengar’s female accomplice, stood guard outside the room.

The CBI has reportedly recorded the victim’s statement before a magistrate under CrPC Section 164, which is admissible in court as evidence. The victim stood by all her accusations.

All the accused, including Sengar, were arrested by the CBI on 13-14 April. Sengar was taken into custody after intense questioning for 16 hours by a CBI team at its office on Naval Kishore Road in Lucknow.
