Activist Sonam Wangchuk is in a stable condition at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, where he is receiving treatment after being shifted from Jantar Mantar by the Delhi Police. Hospital authorities said on Sunday that although his vital signs are stable, he still needs continuous medical supervision because of the physical impact of his prolonged hunger strike.
Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike for 21 days. According to doctors, long periods without food can put stress on the body, making regular medical observation necessary even when a patient’s condition appears stable.

Shifted to hospital following High Court order
Delhi Police moved Wangchuk from the protest site at Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday morning. Officials said the transfer was carried out through a carefully planned three-layer security operation to ensure he received essential medical care.
The move came after directions from the Delhi High Court, with authorities stating that medical attention had become necessary as his fast continued into its 21st day on July 18.
Hospital bulletin gives latest health update
The Medical Superintendent of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital issued an official health bulletin on Wangchuk’s condition.
According to the bulletin, his vital parameters are currently stable. However, doctors found that some of his blood parameters remain slightly altered. The hospital said these changes are because of the physiological stress and systemic effects caused by prolonged fasting.
Doctors stated that Wangchuk is receiving all required medical treatment while his condition is being closely observed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists.
Safdarjung and AIIMS doctors working together
The hospital also confirmed that experts from Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi, have jointly evaluated Wangchuk’s medical condition.
After their assessment, the doctors concluded that he requires sustained medical intervention along with round-the-clock clinical monitoring. They said continuous observation is important to detect and manage any complications that could develop, even though he is currently stable.
Medical teams are regularly checking his clinical condition, including his blood parameters, while providing all necessary care.
Health Ministry says consent for treatment awaited
Earlier, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare released a statement regarding Wangchuk’s treatment.
The Ministry said that despite repeated counselling by the treating doctors and an independent medical expert from AIIMS, Wangchuk’s family had not yet given consent for the recommended medical intervention.
It added that Wangchuk remains under close medical observation at the hospital, while doctors continue efforts to convince him and his family to accept the recommended treatment at the earliest.
