After Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Delhi-Meerut expressway and 135-km long eastern peripheral expressway, Congress President Rahul Gandhi criticised him for ignoring plight of sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh.

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi in a tweet said that Uttar Pradesh’s sugarcane farmers are thinking, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi piggybacks on all the development projects initiated by the UPA, why does he end-up ignoring them when he passes through their region during his road show.

He further said that it is unfortunate that farmers like Udaiveer Singh who died during a hunger strike demanding sugarcane dues cannot even think how can a PM cross by their area ignoring them.

Rahul Gandhi’s tweet comes in the midst of inauguration of two expressway projects by PM Modi and death of a sugarcane farmer from Baraut town in Uttar Pradesh, who was on a hunger strike to protest for the last several days demanding payment of dues by sugar mills and against the hike in rural power tariffs.

Pending sugarcane dues have become the most important issue in the Kairana by-poll with the opposition attacking the BJP over non-payment.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi inaugurated the first phase of the 14-lane Delhi-Meerut expressway from Nizamuddin Bridge in New Delhi and later embarked on a short road show before heading for Baghpat to inaugurate the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE).
