The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Sunday, July 5, rejected reports stating that Bhutan had turned down a proposal from India to import E20 petrol.
In a post on X, the ministry clarified that no such offer was made by Indian Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), while there is no proposal to export the fuel to the neighbouring country.

“Claims that Bhutan declined an offer to import E20 petrol from India are incorrect. No such offer has been made by the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), and there is no proposal for export of E20 petrol to Bhutan,” read a post on the ministry’s X handle.
This comes after multiple media reports stated that Bhutan declined an Indian proposal regarding supply of E20 petrol due to concerns over fuel storage infrastructure as well as the compatibility of vehicles with higher ethanol-blended fuel.
Citing Bhutanese officials, the reports claimed that the country had made a request to the Indian OMCs to continue supplying conventional petrol instead of E20, pointing towards technical and infrastructure-related challenges.
As per reports, the concerns of Bhutan were related to the hygroscopic nature of ethanol that absorbs moisture more readily than conventional petrol.
