Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged citizens to renew their commitment to water conservation, emphasizing the critical role water plays in sustaining life and shaping the planet’s future.
In a message posted on X to mark World Water Day, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of responsible usage and collective action. “Water sustains us and shapes our planet’s future,” he said, calling on people across the country to reaffirm their commitment to conserve every drop and use it responsibly.

He also used the occasion to acknowledge the efforts of individuals and communities working toward sustainable water management. “Today is also a day to appreciate those who engage in sustainable practices, promote awareness, and nurture a culture of conservation,” he added.
Observed annually on March 22, World Water Day was established by the United Nations to raise awareness about the global water crisis and the need for sustainable management of freshwater resources. Each year, governments, organizations, and communities worldwide use the day to highlight water-related challenges, including scarcity, pollution, and the impacts of climate change.
India, home to nearly 18 percent of the world’s population but only about 4 per cent of its freshwater resources, faces significant water stress in several regions. Government initiatives such as the Jal Jeevan Mission, along with campaigns promoting rainwater harvesting and efficient irrigation, aim to address these challenges.
However, experts continue to stress the importance of public participation and behavioral change.
As climate variability intensifies and water demand rises, the call for conservation is becoming increasingly urgent. Policymakers and citizens alike are being urged to act decisively to safeguard this vital resource for future generations.
