The Ghatshila seat had fallen vacant due to the untimely demise of Ramdas Soren. The JMM placed its faith in his son, Somesh, while the BJP fielded Babulal Soren, who had contested earlier as well and is the son of former Chief Minister Champai Soren. Despite a competitive contest involving 13 candidates, the main fight remained between the JMM and the BJP.

The outcome has brought relief and renewed confidence to the JMM and the ruling alliance in Jharkhand. Voters of Ghatshila have once again rejected the BJP and entrusted the mandate to the JMM. The result is being seen as a significant boost for the party.
