Men of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and J&K Police have rescued 250 passengers in 82 vehicles that were stranded due to heavy snowfall at the Zojila Pass on Monday evening.

On receiving reports of the people stranded on the Srinagar–Leh highway, the police launched a massive rescue operation. The road was blocked after a fresh spell of heavy snowfall at Zojila.

Rescue teams of Police assisted by BRO personnel were involved in the rescue operations.

After strenuous efforts, the rescue teams managed to safely evacuate all the 250 stranded passengers and 82 vehicles which included 70 Trucks, 4 Buses and 8 Light motor vehicles. All these vehicles and passengers were shifted to Sonamarg by the rescue teams.

Pertinently the rescue operations were started at 2.30 AM midnight. Concerned territorial officers were part of the rescue operations, a police officer said.

Police has advised drivers commuting on the slippery Srinagar-Leh National Highway to put chains on tyres of vehicles before undertaking the journeys.
