The flood situation worsened in Sangam city on Saturday as water from the swollen Ganga and Yamuna rivers entered several localities.

Both the Ganga and Yamuna rivers flowed above the danger mark, inundating urban areas like Ganganagar, Rajapur, Nevada, Kareli, Gausnagar, and Karelabagh. Most roads and ground floors of buildings were submerged, while heavy rain worsened the situation.

Over 500 people have so far been rescued from marooned areas and taken to safer places by NDRF teams, officials said.

The administration has set up camps for flood-affected people at several places, where they are being provided with food, water, and medicines.

The worst-hit areas are Chhota Baghada and Bargad Ghat, where many Allahabad University students live in rented rooms. With floodwaters rising, most of them have returned to their native places due to the lack of food and electricity.

With the Ganga and Yamuna flowing above the danger mark, people staying near the Yamuna banks in Baluwaghat are spending sleepless nights, as the river’s level continues to rise rapidly due to the continuous release of water from the Betwa and Ken rivers.
