2 children dead, 9 injured in Pakistan shelling on LoC; militant killed

A 10-year-old boy and a teenager girl was killed, while 9 other civilians were injured, in heavy shelling and firing by the Pakistan Army on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, police said on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as 9-year-old Asrar Ahmad of Mohallha Qasba and 15-year-old Yasmeen Akhtar of Kerma village of Dighwar.

The spokesman said Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked and heavy firing and shelling from across the border in Dhigwar, Kerni and Shahpur sectors around 6.50 am.

Police said that Pakistan troops were firing mortars and using automatic weapons. Indian army was retaliating with full force.

“The injured civilians have been hospitalised,” the police said here.

“The Indian military is retaliating strongly and effectively… Shelling and firing exchanges are going on,” Defence Ministry sources said.

On 30 September, the Army unearthed a 14-feet long tunnel, which was being dug from the Pakistani side along the international border and recovered “war-like” store in Arnia sector. A special drive for the detection of tunnels was launched all along the international border.

The cross border shelling has till now claimed life of a Border Security Force personnel and a civilian in Arnia sector of Jammu. Several civilians have been reportedly injured by the shelling.

The year 2017 has seen a sharp increase in ceasefire violations by Pakistan.

Till August 1, there were 285 violations by Pakistani forces while in 2016, the number was significantly less at 228 for the entire year, according to Army figures.

Militant killed, infiltration bid foiled

The Army killed one militant and foiled an infiltration bid on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, defence sources said on Monday.

The militant was killed in the Tangdhar sector.

A search operation is under way.
