Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital and apprised him of the progress the northeastern state has made in socio-economic development and the implementation of major welfare schemes.

Taking to social media platform X, Sarma wrote: “Had the privilege of calling upon Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji in New Delhi today. Briefed him on Assam’s notable strides across socio-economic indicators and the near saturation of major welfare schemes.”

The prime minister is expected to inaugurate year-long birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Assam’s musical and cultural icon whose legacy continues to inspire generations. The celebrations are being seen not just as a tribute to the maestro, but also as a reaffirmation of Assam’s rich cultural heritage on the national stage.

In addition to the centenary inauguration, the PM Modi will dedicate India’s first bio-ethanol plant to the nation. The facility, located in Numaligarh in the Golaghat district, is a key part of the government’s push toward green energy and sustainable development. Built as part of the broader Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP), the plant is expected to boost local employment and significantly reduce the region’s carbon footprint.

Under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, Assam has been showcasing improved outcomes across health, education, infrastructure, and digital governance. The government has claimed near-total saturation in flagship schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, Jal Jeevan Mission, PM Awas Yojana, and Ujjwala Yojana. Additionally, initiatives like ‘Mission Basundhara’ and ‘Amrit Brikshya Andolan’ have drawn attention for their innovative, citizen-centric approaches.
Sarma’s meeting with Modi came at a time when the Centre is actively engaging with northeastern states to integrate them more deeply into the national development narrative. His emphasis on welfare saturation is seen as a push to showcase Assam as a model for governance and welfare delivery in the region.

The PM’s visit in September is being billed as both symbolic and strategic—honouring Assam’s cultural pride through Hazarika, while ushering in a future-forward agenda through green industrialisation.
